Houska, McFarling Win State Championships

The Pierre Governors will have two state champions individually as the Pierre girls also win the team state title for the second straight year.

Deegan Houska in the 160 would win the title match 10-6 over Keenan Sheridan of O’Gorman to claim a state title in his last match as a Governor. Houska had two pin fall victories on Thursday and two decision wins on Friday to claim the title.

Ciara McFarling is now a three time defending state champion as the sophomore picked up a pin and the win for the title. However, it did come with a scary moment, McFarling had to fight to not be pinned in the second period and was down 5-0, but overcame it to win with a pin.

The Governor girls went 1-4 in state championship matches, as Marlee Shorter, Sydney Uhrig and Gianna Stangeland all finished in second place. The boys went 1-5 in title matches as Tristen Spencer, Chance Carda, Trey Lewis and Alex Oedekoven all dropped the championship matches. The Pierre boys would finish third in the team title race while the Pierre girls would win a second straight team championship beating out Canton by 33 points.

Cateri Yellowhawk placed second in the 126 falling in the state championship match.
