The Pierre Governors will have 24 wrestlers competing starting today as the state wrestling tournament opens up in Rapid City. The Governors have a wrestler in every weight class for both the boys and the girls.
The Governor boys won the Region 3A championship last weekend and will look for a strong run as they are one of the top teams competing for a state title. Pierre was able to qualify a wrestler in all 14 weight classes as they needed a few upsets along the way to reach the state tournament. Now those same wrestlers will be looking for more wins and possible upsets to make a deep run in the tournament. The Governors will also be the two seed in the state dual tournament on Saturday needing three dual wins to claim a second title. Shawn Lewis head coach of the Pierre boys wrestling team says for the state dual tournament they need to focus on one dual at a time…
Lewis says for the individual state tournament they need guys to win right away…
The Governor girls will have a wrestler in all 10 weight classes starting today. Pierre won the first ever team title last year and will be looking to reclaim the crown again this year. The Governors have their first set of seniors competing at the state tournament as Gianna Stangleand, Marlee Shorter and Hattie Baldwin will be wrestling for the final time for the Governors. Matt Thorson, head coach of the girls team, says they need to stay in control all weekend…
