Chargers Split with Faulkton Thursday Night

The Sully Buttes Charger girls started slow once again, but were able to make it up, and came away with a regular season finale victory, 39-31 over the Faulkton Trojans in the first game of a doubleheader. In the second game, the Charger boys fought and clawed their way back in the second half to force overtime, but fell short 62-56 against the Trojan boys.

The Sully Buttes girls trailed 13-9 after one quarter, but outscored Faulkton 14-5 in the second to lead 23-18 at the half. Lydia Hill had a solid night in the low post for the 17-3 Chargers, while once again Allyson Wittler found her rhythm, and led the way, scoring 15 points.

The Sully Buttes girls are the top seed in Region 6B, and Tuesday will host the winner of the play-in game, played Monday night. That will pit the Ipswich Tigers against Sunshine Bible Academy. Should the Chargers win that, they’ll go on to play the winner of the 4-5 matchup, Herreid Selby Area vs. Lower Brule next Thursday night.

The Sully Buttes boys led 17-14 after one quarter, but at halftime the lead melted away with Faulkton leading 32-24 at the half. Sully Buttes started strong in the second half, changed up their defense to help their cause, and tied the game up 41-41 after three quarters. Both teams scored 10 points each, and were tied at 51 at the end of regulation. Layne Cotton led the Trojans with 29 points and scored six points in OT to lead the way. Once again for Sully Buttes, Landon Hepker finished with 19 points, and Wesley Wittler added 17, thanks to five threes.

The Charger boys’ record slips to 5-13, while Faulkton sits at 9-10. Sully Buttes has two games left in the regular season, Saturday at the Warner Classic against Waverly-South Shore scheduled for a 12:30 tip off and next Friday at home against North Central.
