Bill To Continue Effort To Stabilize Capitol Lake Clears House Military And Veteran’s Affairs Committee

PIERRE — The effort to protect Capitol Lake and the many memorials around it’s shores continues to gain support in the South Dakota Legislature. The House Military and Veteran’s Affairs Committee referred House Bill 1196 to the House Appropriations Committee Wednesday. Representative Will Mortenson of Pierre says 1196 is looking for three-point-two million dollars to continue work at the lake…

Representative Fred Deutsch asked Mortenson what would happen if nothing is done to the memorials at Capitol Lake and area around the Flaming Fountain…

Deutsch also asked Mortenson what accommodating additional memorials and improvements written into the bill means…

The bill’s only opposition came from the Bureau of Finance and Management who noted that the project was not included in Governor Kristi Noem’s budget and asked that the bill be referred to House appropriators.
