Bill To Establish Task Force On Court Appointed Attorney Payment Passes Legislature

PIERRE — A bill that would let the Unified Judicial System set up a task force to study ways to reduce the cost of court-appointed attorney fees that counties are stuck with has cleared the South Dakota Legislature. House Bill 1064 was on the Senate Floor Monday. Senator David Wheeler urged colleagues to send the bill on to Governor Kristi Noem for consideration….

H-B1064 was amended on it’s path through the Legislature to add an emergency clause, meaning the task force can be established as soon as the bill is signed by the Governor, provided it’s not vetoed. The bill had wide support through the Legislature with only three no votes out of a possible 121 votes through committees and chambers.
