Eagle Butte Man Sentenced In Federal Court For Taking Money From Tribal Nutrition Program

PIERRE — An Eagle Butte man has been convicted in federal court of stealing from a tribal organization. U-S Attorney Alison Ramsdell says 39 year-old Robert Chasing Hawk was sentenced last week to two months in federal prison followed by two years of probation. Chasing Hawk is also responsible for repaying nine-thousand 869 dollars in restitution to the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe’s Elderly Nutrition Program. Chasing Hawk worked for that program and proceeded to write and cash 17 checks totalling nearly 13-thousand dollars. For his own use. He has repayed three thousand of the 12-thousand 869 dollars he wrote out for the checks. The Nutrition Program provides reduced cost lunches for elderly and disabled individuals. The Nutrition Center uses state, federal and tribal funds to support the program. Chasing Hawk is in the custody of the U-S Marshal’s Service to begin serving his sentence.
