In two closely contested games, the Sully Buttes Chargers earned a split, with the Charger girls winning 69-65 in overtime against The Warner Monarchs, while the boys run of bad luck continues, falling 55-51 Saturday afternoon in Onida.
The Charger girls trailed most of the game against Warner–35-32 at the half, and 45-42 after three quarters. With Lydia Hill on the bench after fouling out in the third, the Chargers mustered enough offense, thanks to juniors Addyson Chicoine’s 16 points-ten after the half, and Stevie Wittler’s 20 points. Wittler also notched her 1,000 point of her career during the win.
In overtime the Chargers attacked the basket, and had success, outscoring the Monarchs 11-7 in the extra frame. Sully Buttes is now 10-2, while Warner falls to 10-3.
In the boys matchup, the Monarchs did their best to use their size advantage, but scrappy Sully Buttes hung tough–trailing 29-27 at the end of the first half, and led 40-39 after three periods. Senior Landon Hepker once again was the floor general for the Chargers–finishing with 21 points–including five three point shots. Hepker fouled out with 20 seconds left in the game. Wesley Wittler added twelve, but the Monarch’s Hunter Cramer scored 24 for 6-6 Warner, while Brodey Sauerwein added 16. The Chargers fall to 1-10, after fierce attempts to tie it up.
Next up for Sully Buttes is a girls-boys doubleheader Tuesday night at Murdo against Jones County, while Warner is at home for a twin bill against Faulkton Area.
