State-Tribal Relations Committee Hoping To Keep Code Talker Memorial Alive

PIERRE — A memorial to Sioux Code Talkers is still alive and well in the halls of the State Capitol. A presentation on the project came before the State-Tribal Relations Committee Thursday. Sculptor Darwin Wolf outlined how the Code Talkers of World Wars I and II will be depicted along the shores of Capital Lake…

The phrase “The Forbidden Language That Saved The World will be embedded with medals awarded to South Dakota’s Sioux Tribes by the federal government in recognition of the Code Talkers…

Wolf says the memorial will be more than a military memorial…

Former Representative Steven Haugaarad brought a bill last year to fund the project that was killed by the legislature. The projected cost of the memorial is 850-thousand dollars of which some grants and private funds are being sought with hopes in getting assistance from the state for some of the costs.
