Sully Buttes Boys Finally Get Court Time, Drop Opener to Winner

The Sully Buttes Charger boys basketball team had to wait until the last day of 2022 for a live game, and it showed.  The Chargers fell to the 3-0 Winner Warriors 65-38 Saturday afternoon at the Armory in Winner.

The Warriors started strong, and it was evident Sully Buttes wasn’t acclimated to game pace, and were outscored 16-5 in the first quarter.  Sully Buttes found more success as the game wore on, but the Warriors senior depth and game experience kept Sully Buttes at arms length the rest of the contest.  In the fourth quarter the mercy rule running clock was enacted midway through the final stanza, and both teams emptied their benches for varsity time experience for younger players.

Winner had three players in double figures, with 6’7″ sophomore Shawn Hammerbeck scoring 20 points, while seniors Blake Volmer and Aiden Barfuss totaling 17 and 13 points, respectively.

For the Chargers, freshman Wesley Wittler showed his shooting acumen by scoring 20 points, while Thomas Farries ended the afternoon with eight points.

Next up for the 0-1 Chargers is a Monday doubleheader contest against Lyman County.  The scheduled games have been moved up to earlier in the day, with a 2PM start for the JV contests, while the varsity girls will start at approximately 4:30, and the boys game to follow.
