Jefferson Defeats Pierre in Four Sets in First Round

The Pierre Governors put up a fight in the first round of the state tournament on Thursday against the Jefferson Cavaliers, but would fall in four sets 25-15, 24-26, 25-21 and 25-21.

The Governors couldn’t keep up with the Cavaliers in the first set, but would respond well in set two picking up the two point victory. They would hang tough in sets three and four although Jefferson had just enough to defeat the Governors. Reese Terwilliger had 11 kills to lead the Governors as Lily Sanchez would finish with nine and Makenna Schlekeway and Ayvrie Kaiser each had six for Pierre. The Governors downfall was the 14 service errors even though Jefferson had 11 of their own. Terwilliger had three of the eight Pierre aces on the afternoon.

Maddie Paulson would lead all hitters with 13 kills while Ella Kvernmo had seven of her nine in the fourth set to help seal the win for the Cavs who advance to face the Washington Warriors in the state semifinals on Friday night.

Pierre will face Rapid City Stevens at 11:30 on Friday in the consolation semifinals. Coverage will start at 11:00 on KCCR and on YouTube at KCCR Sports with Jon Winkler on the call.
