Two Trucks Take Turns At Pierre Railroad Viaduct Wednesday, And Fail

PIERRE — Pierre’s railroad viaduct doubled down on wayward over-height vehicles Wednesday, leading to the arrest of one of the drivers. Around 10:40 am a northbound pick-up hauling a shipping container hit the 11 foot, three-inch bridge causing the container to shift and slide partially off the flat bed trailer it was sitting on. Pierre Police Captain Bryan Walz says no damage was reported to either the 100-plus year bridge or the container. Just over three hours later, around 1:45 a box truck driven by Terry McCaudis of Sioux Falls attempted to drive under the viaduct. The top of the cargo truck struck the viaduct and McCaudis attempted to continue passing under the structure, doing substantial damage to the truck’s roof. McCaudis was arrested by Pierre police, not for hitting the bridge and failing to follow Pierre’s truck route, but for an active arrest warrant from Lincoln County. He was transported to the Hughes County Jail. Walz did not disclose the nature of the arrest warrant. The driver in the first crash, Ricardo Vazquez-Diaz of Houston, Texas was not cited by police.
