Chargers Take it Down to the End, Come up Just Short in Playoff Loss

The Sully Buttes Charger football team’s season came to a close, after falling behind midway through the fourth quarter, and coming up just short on a fourth and inches to allow Irene-Wakonda to escape with a 36-30 victory Thursday night in Onida.

The teams battled back and forth through the first half, and were tied 14-14 at halftime. The Chargers scored on their first possession in the second half, and go up 22-14, only to have Irene-Wakonda counter with a score of their own with their first touch offensively in the second half-making the score 22-20.

Midway through the third, the Chargers had a quick strike 66 yard Landon Hepker to Trever Marshall connection to go up 30-20. The Eagles answered again with a 66 yard drive of their own to pull within 30-28, after the two point conversion.

In the fourth quarter, after the Chargers threw an interception in the end zone, the Eagles drove the field, capping the drive with a Dashell Spurrell to Clay Broderson six yard pass, and added the two point conversion for the final margin.

Sully Buttes out gained Irene-Wakonda 344 yards to 325, with the Chargers totaling 175 yards rushing, and 169 yards passing.

Sully Buttes ends their season at 7-3, while Irene Wakonda ups its mark to 5-5. Now the Eagles will have an even longer bus ride next Friday, as they’ll travel to Herreid, to take on the Herreid/Selby Area Wolverines, a 44-14 winner over Avon.
