Pierre Opens Playoffs as Top Seed Hosting Sturgis

The Pierre Governors will begin its quest for a sixth straight state championship as they open the playoffs at home against Sturgis in the 1-8 matchup.

Sturgis is one of just two teams the Governors didn’t see this year in 11AA and that in itself could pose a problem. However, the Governors have been able to see Sturgis every once in a while, while scouting its next opponent. Sturgis comes in after its overtime loss to the Spearfish Spartans and are 4-5 on the season. The Scoopers have just two AA wins this season over Aberdeen Central and Douglas. Sturgis Quarterback Owen Cass has thrown for over 1700 yards and Tyan Buss has caught nearly 800 yards on 54 receptions.

The Governors and Lincoln Kienholz is now within 376 yards of the All-Time passing record for both 11 man and 9 man. The Govs secured a 40 point win over Douglas to close out the season at 9-0 and as the top seed will host their way to the Dakotadome with two wins. Steve Steele, head coach of the Governors, says Sturgis has a couple of playmakers…

The Governors are still trying to solidify its offensive line dealing with injuries and guys playing hurt. Steele says they have a lot of different guys ready to play this week…

Steele says to beat Sturgis they have to do a good job at the line of scrimmage…

Coverage tonight will begin at 6:30 with kickoff at 7:00 on KCCR and on YouTube at KCCR Sports with Jon Winkler and Blake Dean on the call.
