The Pierre Governors would get off to a fast start at home on Thursday as they would defeat the Yankton Gazelles in three sets, 25-11, 25-16 and 25-22 to improve to 12-4 on the season.
Pierre jumped out to an early first set lead and controlled the remaining of the set and it would carry over to the second set. Five different Governors had multiple kills in the first set win as Yankton had no answer. Pierre’s dominance continued into the second set with a nine point victory, but the third set was not the strong one for Pierre. The Govs couldn’t get the separation and had too many hitting errors trying to close out Yankton. However, they still found a way to get the third set win to complete the sweep. Ayvrie Kaiser would lead the way with 10 kills on the night while Reese Terwilliger would have eight and Lily Sanchez and Makenna Schlekeway had four each. Pierre had a total of nine aces with Terwilliger serving four while Sanchez and Remi Price each had two. Yankton’s Macy Drotzman had the match high 11 kills with 10 of the 11 coming in sets two and three. Overall Yankton had nine service errors as they fall to 3-14 on the season.
The Governors will travel to Huron on Tuesday in a rematch of the five set comeback victory for Pierre. Coverage will start at 6:30 with first serve at 7:00 on KCCR and on YouTube at KCCR Sports.
