Kienholz Sets Record, Governors Cruise Past Tigers

The Pierre Governors are now 7-0 on the season with a 59-7 win over the Huron Tigers on Friday night in Huron as Lincoln Kienholz has set the new South Dakota career passing yard mark.

The Governors didn’t necessarily jump out to the lead they were hoping to have although Deegan Houska jumped on a fumble on the first play of the game which turned into a two play drive score for the Governors. Pierre’s next drive, Kienholz would hit Brecken Krueger for a nine yard completion which put him pass Austin Sumner for the South Dakota career passing yard leader. Kienholz finished with over 200 yards passing in the game. Krueger had his biggest game with four catches and his first touchdown reception of the season. Pierre led 21-0 in the second quarter before Huron put together a 10 play drive as the Tigers were able to score from 15 yards out. Pierre’s next drive ended with an interception and Huron began driving the ball down the field again and were inside the red zone with just under two minutes remaining. However, the Governor defense forced its second of three fumbles and the next play was an 88 yard run from Kienholz to give the Governors at 28-7 lead at the half. The Governor defense would force three fumbles including a Trey Lewis scoop and score and two interceptions as Jacob Mayer picked off a pass and Spencer Easland would return an interception 40 yards to the house which put the game into a running clock in the second half.

The Governors will host undefeated Tea Area on Friday in a rematch of the 11AA state championship from last season. Pregame coverage begins at 6:30 with kickoff at 7:00 on KCCR and on YouTube at KCCR Sports with Jon Winkler and Blake Dean on the call.
