Pierre Soccer Begins Playoffs with Girls at Home, Boys in Rapid City

Today begins the journey for the Pierre Governor soccer teams as they need four straight wins to claim a state championship. The girls will host Mitchell as the boys travel to Rapid City Stevens.

The Governor girls are in a rematch against the Kernels from it’s wildest game of the year. Pierre trailed 3-0 just seconds into the second half, but would score all four goals in a flurry coming in 17 minutes with the game winner coming with only a minute to go. Now, Pierre will look for the same offensive output, but staying stronger on the defensive side for a clean win to reach the quarterfinals on Saturday. Mitchell has dropped three of its last four while the Governors have won three of its last four.

The Governor boys come in as the 11 seed to the tournament and will play Rapid City Stevens, a rare team they didn’t face in the regular season. Pierre is coming off two big matches, a near win over Jefferson and a tie with Huron, two of the top three teams in the state tournament. Stevens comes in at 9-2-1 and have won six in a row allowing just one goal in those six wins. Overall, Stevens has allowed just nine goals, five coming against Sioux Falls Jefferson in one of its two losses.

The girls will play at 4:30 at home with boys playing at 7:15 Central time in Rapid City. You can listen to the girls game on KCCR and watch it on YouTube at KCCR Sports with coverage beginning at 4:00 with Jon Winkler and Mendel Miller on the call.
