Girls Comeback to Tie, Boys Fall as Governor Soccer Battles Jefferson, Winds

The winds were strong on Saturday at Jefferson High School but the Governor girls used it to their advantage tying the game 1-1 as the boys fell for the second straight game in a 2-1 loss.

It took a minute and 16 seconds into the first half for the Cavaliers to score its goal of the game, but the Governors played well after giving up the goal even though they couldn’t find a goal. It was Ryann Barry’s shot from a Grace Richter pass against the hard blowing wind that curved its way to be misplayed by the goalkeeper and it found its way across the goal line to tie the score at 1-1 with just over 20 minutes remaining and force the tie as the Govs move to 7-4-1. Ireland Templeton made six saves in net.

The Governor boys jumped out to a 1-0 lead as Steven Blanchette crossed a ball into the goal box and Rylan Derry was left wide open in front of the goalie to give Pierre the lead with 17 minutes remaining in the first half. However, Andrew Hirsch and Mason Koch each had a hard shot pass Carson Ahartz for the two goals of the game within 11 minutes of Derry’s goal to give the Cavs the lead for good. Jefferson outshot the Govs 24-11 but Ahartz made 10 saves in net for Pierre as they fall to 7-4-1.

The Governors wrap up the season on Tuesday in Huron facing the Tigers. The girls will play first at 4:00 with the boys to play at 6:00.
