Cedar Hill Cemetery Board Working To Improve Historic Site, Resume Burials

FORT PIERRE — There could be new life, so to speak, put into the historic Cedar Hill Cemetery in Fort Pierre. Cedar Hill Cemetery Board Chair Doug Mortenson presented an update on the cemetery to the Fort Pierre City Council this week…

Mortenson says they have a fairly good idea on how the cemetery is set up…

One area of trouble for the group is that they can’t locate some areas of unsold lots. Modrtenson says the Board is seeking grant funding to make improvements to Cedar Hill Cemetery like a water hydrant, trash cans and a kiosk…

Mortenson says he’s been able to find every grave in the cemetery and wants to open the cemetery to all burials. Some funeral directors have expressed concerns about heavy hearse vehicles being able to navigate the steep terrain of Cedar Hill. Mortenson says they have received a lot of interest in purchasing lots in the cemetery.
