Pierre Girls Soccer has Incredible Comeback, Boys Dominant Second Half in Victories

Both the Pierre Governor soccer teams had remarkable second halves as the Governor girls turned a 3-0 deficit into a 4-3 win and the boys would score seven unanswered second half goals in an 8-1 win as they sweep Mitchell.

The Governor girls went down 2-0 at halftime to the Mitchell Kernels as Mia Mullenmeister would score both. 35 seconds into the second half Mullenmeister would net the hat trick to make it a 3-0 game. Then with 20 minutes remaining the Governors came to life. Grace Richter dribbled up the right side of the field and her crossed bounced off Ryann Barry and then Lexie Hillmer and into the net to give the Govs its first goal of the game. Then Barry would send the second goal past the goalkeeper just minutes later to pull the Govs within one. After the second water break of the half, Barry lined up a corner kick which was headed in by Bria Sargent to tie the game at 3-3, but the remarkable comeback wouldn’t stop there. With just over a minute remaining Gracelyn Taylor sent a through ball over the defense to allow Barry to win the race and send home the winning goal and complete the comeback with a 4-3 win. The girls are now 5-2 and have won three straight.

The Governor boys would play to a 1-1 tie at the end of the first half with Mitchell as the Kernels scored just its second goal of the season on a PK. Then it was Ashton Griese and Rylan Derry who shined in the second half as Derry would score a hat trick and Griese would add two goals in part of a seven goal second half to explode to an 8-1 win. Elias Gilk and Brady Miller each had a goal in the second half. Cesar Ramirez had the lone first half goal as the Pierre boys have now gone unbeaten in its last three matches at 2-0-1 and improve to 4-2-1 on the year.

The Governors will have a week off before taking on the Harrisburg Tigers on Thursday on the road. Coverage will begin at 4:40 on KCCR and on YouTube at KCCR Sports with kickoff at 5:00 for the girls and 7:00 for the boys.
