The Sully Buttes Charger football team opened their home schedule against rival Potter County, and took control from the first series, en route to a 36-6 victory Friday night. The Chargers kicked off, and Potter County’s troubles started from that point. Numerous bad snaps from center caused the Battlers problems all night long.
Sully Buttes got excellent field position and scored on their opening series on a Thomas Farries 7 yard run. Later on in the first quarter, the Battlers held Sully Buttes out of the endzone, took over at their own 3 yard line. The Chargers stiffened up defensively, and scored on a safety, with cornerback Gavin Barber making the two point tackle.
After the Chargers made the score 10-0, they failed to punt successfully, and that gave the Battlers the ball in Sully Buttes territory, resulting in a Landon Larson to Kyle Falkenhagen five yard strike to make the score 10-6.
After that, it was all Sully Buttes. A Landon Hepker five yard run, a 40 yard pass from Farries to Barber, a Lucas Arcoran 44 yard run, and a Farries one yard run capped the night for the Chargers.
Sully Buttes outgained Potter County 341 total yards to 95, with an impressive 278 yards on the ground. Sully Buttes didn’t attempt a pass in the entire second half, after leading 24-6 at the midway break.
The Chargers are now 2-0 on the season, and travel to Langford Friday for a matchup against the Lions. The 1-1 Battlers get their home opener Friday night against Faulkton.
During the contest, senior wideout Marshall Wittler suffered a broken ankle, and will likely be lost for the season.
