The Pierre Governor soccer teams were able to defeat the Sturgis Scoopers on Thursday as both the boys and girls were able to shutout the Scoopers in their wins.
The Governor girls would pick up a 2-0 win over the Scoopers as Pierre held the Scoopers shotless in the first half. While Pierre didn’t score in the first half, they would still put up 10 shots, five of which were on target for saves. With 24 minutes left in the second half, Lexie Hillmer would score to give the Governors a 1-0 lead on a pass from Grace Richter. Then Bria Sargent would send a shot over the top of the keeper on a bouncing ball to give Pierre a 2-0 lead which was enough to get the win. Ireland Templeton had to make just two saves in her season debut on five Sturgis shots.
The Governor boys broke through the Scooper defense late in the first half as Ashton Griese would score his first varsity career goal to give Pierre a 1-0 lead. Then as time was expiring in the first half, Griese extended the play back to Rylan Derry as he smoked a shot top corner with zeros on the clock to give Pierre a 2-0 lead. Derry would add his second of the game on a long feed from Griese on another impressive shot to beat the keeper to make it a 3-0 game.
Both Governor teams are now 3-2 on the season and will travel to Watertown on Tuesday to take on the Arrows in an ESD contest. The girls will play at 4:00 and the boys at 6:00.
