PIERRE — A legislative summer study committee is trying to figure out a way to help counties pay for improvements to their jails. The “Study Committee on Regional Jails and State Correctional Plans” held their third meeting in Sioux Falls Monday. Clay County has been struggling to find a way to pay for major improvements needed in their jail. Commissioner Richard Hammond told the committee they have been working on ways to keep people from returning to jail…
Hammond says they would like to see counties have a local option sales tax for projects like these…
Committee member, Senator Bryan Breitling of Miller says while the sales tax probably doesn’t stand much of a chance, he did offer some options…..
The committee will meet again later this fall to talk about legislative options.
