Sully Buttes Gets Road Win to Open Season over Stanley County

In a game that featured a bevy of young players, the Sully Buttes Charger football team came out in the second half and relied on seniors to secure a 16-6 victory over Stanley County Friday night in Ft. Pierre.
With the score tied at 0-0 after the first half, both teams went in at the break to see what they could string together to mount success. Sully Buttes had only 69 yards total offense in the first half, compared to Stanley County’s 80 total offensive yards.

In the second half the Chargers called on senior quarterback Landon Hepker and senior back Thomas Farries, and they both answered the bell. Farries finished the game with 88 yards from scrimmage–thanks in part to a 53 yard scoring run in the third quarter. And Hepker carred 22 times for 70 yards and scored on a two yard run, and he also supplied both extra points.

The never-say-die Buffaloes didn’t back down, and a Broch Zeeb to Chase Hanson 52 yard strike with 6:24 remaining kept the contest interesting.

Both teams looked sloppy, with penalties and turnovers throughout, but Sully Buttes stiffened defensively at the end to come away with a victory. Sully Buttes finished the night with 230 total offensive yards, while Stanley County had 163 on the ground and through the air.

Next up for the 1-0 Chargers is a tough home contest Friday night against powerhouse Potter County, last years state runner up, while the 0-1 Buffs travel to DeSmet to take on the Bulldogs.
