Disabled American Veterans Looking For Volunteer Drivers

Disabled American Veterans Looking For Volunteer Drivers

PIERRE — A critical service to help get American armed service veterans to medical appointments in central South Dakota is missing an important piece, drivers. The Disabled American Veterans service in Pierre has been without a driver for a month and a half. Jack Post is the Transportation Coordinator for the D-A-V at Fort Meade and says they’ve been making due…

Post says most veterans in the Pierre area are over 65 years-old and the long drive to Sioux Falls or the Black Hills can be difficult to do alone..

The service is free for veterans and the drivers all volunteers…

The Pierre D-A-V would make around two dozen trips per month. The modern day D-A-V network started in South Dakota in 1987 and is the model for similar services across the country. Those interested in volunteering to drive for D-A-V can contact Post at the Fort Meade V-A Medical Center.
