Pierre City Commission Approves Street Closure Request For Street Master Gravity Drags

PIERRE — The Pierre Street Masters’ 33rd annual Dam Run weekend is six weeks away. The group appeared before the Pierre City Commission Tuesday night to get approval for the popular Gravity Drags scheduled for Saturday August 13th. Street Masters member Dave Hauman says gone is the use of Governors Drive after an unplanned switch to Church Street last year…

Hauman says it worked out better on Church Street in the end…

Access to Rawlins Library and the Oahe Family Y-M-C-A will be maintained during the four-hour event…

Church Street will be closed from Nicolette Avenue to Jefferson Avenue for the event with barricades on South Dakota Boulevard, Nicolette and Jefferson. Through traffic on Governors Drive will be controlled by event staff with the racing being paused to allow for traffic to cross. Approximately 60 cars took part in the gravity drags last year. Gravity drags involve cars coasting downhill to see which vehicle coasts the fastest while each vehicle’s engine is on, but idling. Other Dam Run weekend events include a show-and-shine at the State Capitol and the actual Dam Run tour of Pierre and Fort Pierre ending with an ice cream social at the Oahe Downstream Rec Area.
