Severe Storms Cause Worst Damage Ever To West Central Electric Transmission System

MURDO — Three days of severe thunderstorm winds have thrashed the infrastructure of Murdo-based West Central Electric Cooperative. Member Services Manager Jessie Tucker says they’ve had up to 2600 members out since storms overnight Saturday…

Tucker says it’s the most storm damage they’ve ever seen…

West central South Dakota is rugged ranch country and the storm brought not only 70 to 80 mile an hour winds but heavy rains. Tucker says it’s been difficult terrain to make repairs…

Some 70 linemen are working to help West Central restore power including crews from the Oahe, Moreau-Grand; Cherry-Todd; West River Electric; La Creek Electric and two private contractors. Tucker says outages will dramatically drop once transmission lines can restore power to substations on the system.
