Guthmiller, A Rare South Dakotan Javelin Thrower, Wins NSIC Championship

For the first time ever this season, South Dakota High School Track and Field had the javelin throw. However, it was scored for just Class AA with some exhibition throws from the lower classes. Prior to this year, high school athletes didn’t have the opportunity so getting to college and then throwing javelin would yield little to no thoughts. But Rachel Guthmiller, a 2018 Sully Buttes graduate, didn’t ignore the chance and in 2022, she would win the NSIC Championship at Northern State University.

Guthmiller was a standout track and field athlete during her time at Sully Buttes and continued her career throwing at Northern State University but it quickly had something extra added when she was approached with trying javelin…

Since her freshman year, Guthmiller has been adding on to the personal bests tallying more top ten finishes throughout each season in javelin, discus and hammer throws. But Covid hit and Guthmiller lost the 2020 outdoor season. She says it was a big motivating factor to get even better…

Guthmiller finished with 10 top-ten finishes on the season in 2022 including winning the conference championship which came down to the final throw…
