After Ten Years and Beginning Pierre High School Baseball, Derk Retires

For the first time ever beginning in 2023, Derk Campbell will not be in the dugout for the Pierre Governor Baseball team. Campbell helped begin the program in its first year in 2013 and has coached the team ever since.

With Campbell as a coach the Governors have compiled 146-56 record including this past year at 14-13. That’s good for a .722 win percentage over 10 years. No Pierre team has finished under .500 in the 10 years of existence and a lot of credit goes to Campbell to make it happen.

The beginning years, Campbell coached alongside Steve Gray and Sam Koenecke before Koenecke retired and Ryan Krueger filled his spot. Landon Badger joined the coaching staff this past season.

All the coaches had the same sentiment about Campbell and his coaching. Very hardnosed but would go to battle for each and every kid on the team. Koenecke knew when he stepped away in 2017, Campbell wasn’t ready to give it up just yet…

Krueger says he’s done enormous amounts for the kids and program…

Gray says it’s been a fun 10 years with Campbell…

Gray says Campbell was big in getting the field prepared throughout his time with the Governors…

Although Campbell retires from coaching, he’ll still continue to play a major role in the sports community with his work at All-Around Graphix.
