Kelly Wins State Title, Governor Tennis Team Fifth at State Tournament

Spencer Kelly gutted through an injury in the championship match in Flight Five on Tuesday and came away as a state champion in his senior year as the Governor tennis team took home fifth place as a team in the 2022 state tournament.

Kelly had to upset the two seed in the semifinals to reach the championship and then, in texts exchanged with Kelly, he dislocated his left shoulder during the championship match in the first set. He was able to get the shoulder back in place and resume playing. He came away with the win 7-6 and 6-3 to claim his first state championship.

Luke Leingang in flight four finished in second place for Pierre while Blake Judson won the third place match in flight two and Carter Schulz was fourth in flight six for the singles side for Pierre.

On the doubles side, flight one of Matthew Hanson and Judson finished in sixth place, Kelly and Leingang in flight two finished in fourth place and flight three of Devin Dodson and Crew Heier were eliminated in the fifth place semifinals. The Governors finished with a total of 282.5 points which was fifth best in the state. Yankton took home first with a 493.5

Hanson, Judson, Leingang, Kelly and Schulz are all graduate for the Governors. You can see all the brackets and team scores below.
