Tennis Begins State Tournament in Rapid City Monday

The Pierre Governor tennis team is in Rapid City as the Class A state tournament begins on Monday. One Governor will look for a second straight state championship.

Luke Leingang in the 2021 state tournament took first place in Singles Flight 3 and in his senior year will look for now a Flight 4 state title. The Governors have a senior heavy team as just two flights in total, singles three and doubles three are the only flights without seniors. Matt Hanson in singles Flight 1, Blake Judson in Flight 2, Leingang in Flight 4, Spencer Kelly in Flight 5 and Carter Schulz in Flight 6 will all be competing for the final time in their Governor Tennis Career. Hanson and Judson in Doubles Flight 1 and Leingang and Kelly in Flight 2 will be looking to end careers on a strong note. Devin Dodson will play in Flight 3 and Dodson along with Crew Heier are in doubles three.

After the ESD, head coach of the Pierre Governors Emily Williamson could see fatigue setting in at the end of the tournament. But having a couple of days of recovery and the tournament split over two days, she says it was nice to have a break at the end of the week…

The bracket is unknown until Sunday night so nobody knows the first round opponent until right before heading to bed. Williamson says it’s more of a personal preference for each player on if its beneficial or not…

Williamson says the mindset needs to be right heading into the state tournament…

You can check brackets below.. The first matches begin at 9:00 AM Central time in Rapid City.
