Pierre Governor Baseball Begins Season with Sights Set on Deep Playoff Run

A picture of Brandon Valley’s team after beating the Pierre Governors in the Region Championship in 2021 has been hanging up everywhere there’s been baseball workouts and practice. Steve Gray, head coach of the Pierre Governors says it’s there by design.

The Governors were defeated at home and missed out on the State semifinals by one game last year. It’s the second straight season they’ve lost as the home team in the Region Championship, but in 2019 they lost in Watertown after rain forced the game to be moved. So it was the first time they had lost at Hyde Stadium to keep them from making the state tournament. They don’t want the same result to happen again. A lot of the same guys who went through the pain of 2021 will be back for the 2022 season. The Governors graduated eight seniors from last year’s team but bring back plenty of experience, whether from last year’s spring team or from Post 8’s senior legion team. Gray likes the pitching staff they have heading into the season…

Pierre faces Sturgis on Friday and Central on Saturday, both of which have already started the season. Gray says they need to put the ball in play this weekend…

Coverage will begin at 5:40 Central Time for the doubleheader on Friday and then at 2:40 on Saturday for the varsity game only. Both games will be on KCCR and on YouTube at KCCR Sports with Jon Winkler on the call.
