Team South Dakota 19U Falls in Shootout

A 1-1 draw through a five minute overtime period led to a shootout, which is unfamiliar territory for South Dakota as Team SD 19U fell in the shootout 1-0 and losing 2-1 in its opening game of the national tournament.

Watertown’s Jaclyn Lloyd scored the only goal of the game for Team SD in the first period to give the South Dakota a 1-0 lead over the Steel City Selects. But it was strong defense from the Selects as they allowed just 11 shots on goal the entire game. Lloyd’s goal was answered with just under three minutes remaining in the first period to even things at one apiece. It was held scoreless through the overtime session sending the game into a shootout. In the five round shootout, Team SD was unable to score as Mitchell’s Kelsey Amick, Sioux Falls’ Berit Hefti, Lloyd, Oahe’s Ashton Lee and Sioux Falls’ Gabby Schroeder all were stopped. Lilly Relyea had the tying goal and scored the only shootout goal for the win. Sioux Falls’ Riley Vander Esch made 21 saves in net for Team SD.

Team SD will face the Philadelphia Jr. Flyers on Friday at 10:15 AM.
