Sioux Falls’ Lilly Moon would have a hat trick to pace Team South Dakota 16U into a opening round victory over the Florida Alliance 6-1 on Thursday in West Chester, Pennsylvania.
Team SD led just 1-0 at the end of the first period with Moon’s opening goal which also found her stick in the back of the net with the puck. Moon scored quickly into the second period on the power play before Mitchell’s Reese Amick gave Team SD a 3-0 lead after two periods. Morgan Jones of Aberdeen and Brooke Jarman of Mitchell scored in the third period before Moon finished her hat trick to go up 6-0. The Alliance would score to end Yankton’s Jayda Tjeerdsma’s shutout bid midway through the third. She finished with 18 saves on 19 shots.
Team SD will now face Honeybaked, Michigan at 5:55 on Friday. Honeybaked lost 2-1 to the Philadelphia Jr. Flyers in a shootout in its first game.
