First Ever Capitals Cup a Success, Paving Way for Year Two

When the inquiry was sent out on Facebook, Steve Steele, head coach of the Oahe Capitals, says he didn’t know what kind of response he was going to get for a weekend men’s league tournament. But the interest level was high from a lot of former Capitals players over the years to participate in the first ever Capitals Cup.

Each team was guaranteed four games over the weekend with three games for each of the four teams on Saturday and then depending on the record, would be in either the third place game or the championship game on Sunday. Steele says it was a lot of fun over the weekend and it surpassed all expectations…

Steele says everyone that came to play no matter how many years they’ve been out of hockey, they still got it…

Among those guys that still have it, Steele is one of them. He tied for the most goals in the tournament with eight, tying with Dusty Meyer, the all-time goals leader in state history. Former Capitals, Jaden Griese, Landon Badger, Elliot Leif, Raef Briggs and Austin Wagner all had five goals in the tournament. Brandon Swenson was tied third with five assists. Goalies Sam Shaw, Tristan and Tim Fuerst and Matt Pease all former Capitals all had fantastic weekends for their respective teams. Shaw had the most saves with a 104 and the best save percentage for the Canada Gooses. The Canada Gooses fell in the championship game to Pease and Central Dakota Eye Care 6-4.

Steele says this isn’t going to be a one-time tournament…

You can go back and watch the third place and championship games on YouTube at Capital City Rock Sports.
