Steele Named Coach of the Year for South Dakota Hockey

As voted on by the coaches of the South Dakota Amateur Hockey Association, Steve Steele, the head coach of the Oahe Capitals, was named the 2021-2022 Coach of the Year.

The Capitals finished the regular season at 13-7 and won its first round state tournament game for the third consecutive season all since Steele has been head coach. Since being named the head coach, Steele has compiled a record of 61-26-1-6 which is combined between preseason, regular season and postseason. Although Capitals fans knew how good this team was, there was still a lot of turnover from last year’s team especially graduating one of the best lines the state has ever seen. However, the Capitals still scored just 11 less goals all season and gave up 24 fewer goals this year. Nathan Sanderson, the president of the Oahe Hockey Association says this is a deserving award…

Sanderson says they appreciate his thoughtful approach…

Sanderson says one of the things Steele does with the Capitals program is he teaches more than just how to score goals…

Sanderson reiterates the Coach of the Year is voted on by Steele’s peers and he’s a solid coach and a good mentor for the players in the program…

Steele will enter his fourth year as head coach in the winter of 2022.
