Bill To Fund Repairs For The Cottonwood Field Station Survives Five Motions In House Appropriations

PIERRE — The future of funding for much-needed upgrades to a one-of-its-kind ranching research station west of Philip in Jackson County remains undecided in the South Dakota Legislature. Senate Bill 84 would set aside six-million dollars for the Cottonwood Field Station. Representative Randy Gross asked Dr. Kristie Cammack, who manages Cottonwood about getting industry support to help with the improvements like other South Dakota State facilities…

There was no opposition testimony on the bill, however a motion to table and a motion do pass failed on the measure. Gross moved sending S-B 84 to the 41st day…

The motion to send the bill to the 41st day also failed prompting House Appropriations Committee Chair Chris Karr to defer action until after the House floor session. Upon return early Monday night Representative Taffy Howard moved a Do Not Pass recommendation. A substitute Do Pass motion by Representative Linda Duba failed for lack of a second. Howard’s Do Not Pass recommendation sent S-B 84 to the House floor on an eight-to- one vote.
