Capitals Finish Season with Thrilling Overtime Victory in Sioux Falls

The Oahe Capitals are into the 4-5 matchup in the state tournament with or without a win on Saturday, but it didn’t stop them from having a thrilling overtime 5-4 win over Sioux Falls 1 to close out the season.

Both offenses came to play on Saturday as the Capitals were able to pepper another 51 shots on net as Ryan Flanagan made 46 saves. The Flyers countered with 39 while Kieran Duffy made 35 saves. Both teams strategies seemed to be shooting for rebounds and both goalies stood on top of their games on the night. The Flyers held a 1-0 lead at the end of the first period but it was Carter Sanderson scoring knocking off the water bottle from the top of the net just 25 seconds into the second period to begin a four goal second period. Keenan Howard roofed a shot that began with a crazy bounce right to him in front of the net. Dre Berndt scored short handed and then Jarron Beck added the fourth goal stuffing in a loose puck on the power play. However, the Flyers would come back and tie the game up with the goalie pulled to send the regular season finale into overtime. Sanderson broke free with Grayson Hunsley on a 2-on-1 and Sanderson wouldn’t be denied as he scored the OT winner with 4:57 left scoring his second of the game, second OT winner of the season and finishing with 26 goals on the season. Captain, Ashton Griese picked up two assists as he finished the year at the 30 assist mark leading the team.

The Capitals finish the year at 13-7 and will be the number four seed into the state tournament. All 11 games of the 2022 state tournament will be on Capital City Rock and on YouTube at Capital City Rock Sports on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, March 11-13.
