Pierre, Sully Buttes, Stanley County Begin State Wrestling Tournaments Thursday

The Class A and B wrestling state championships begin on Thursday as the Pierre Governors send 24 wrestlers, 14 for the boys and 10 for the girls looking for a couple of team state titles. The Sully Buttes Chargers will send three girls to the state tournament while the Stanley County Buffaloes will send three boys to the Class B tournament.

The Sully Buttes Charges will be sending three girls this year to the state tournament as Tahni Yellowhawk, Cateri Yellowhawk and Saige Heath will all be representing the Chargers this year. Heath has already received a bye to the second round where she will face Shorter in the quarterfinals.

Stanley County will have Chase Hanson, Colton Brady and Levi Stover competing in the State B Tournament, Hanson and Stover are returners for the Buffaloes but Brady will be competing for the first time in the state tournament.

The Pierre Governors had a successful weekend in the region tournament as 11 of the 14 athletes reached the championship match with six Govs picking up tournament championships and all 14 finishing third or higher. The Governor girls have an athlete in each of the weight classes as Ciara McFarling and Marlee Shorter are looking to repeat as State Champions. Head Coach of the Girls Matt Thorson says in order for the Governors to pick up multiple state championships, they need to take it one match at a time…

New to the tournament this year is the team state championship for the girls. The Governors would have most likely won the team title if there was one last year and Thorson says they need to be at their best this weekend to win the first one…
