KCCR Blows Out The Candles On 63 Years Of Service To Pierre

PIERRE — It was 63 years ago today that KCCR, powered up a transmitter for the very first time. It was originally on 1590 AM and had a tower site where the homes around Hillsview Golf Course currently sit. Dean Sorenson is one of only a handful of owners of KCCR over the last six decades and says he’s happy to see it continue to serve Pierre…

Sorenson spent around 10 years with KGFX radio in Pierre before stepping aside to work for a time in politics before the ownership chance opened for him…

Sorenson says the station can stay relevant by continuing to redefine itself in the face of an expanding social media landscape…

The tower site moved to its current location north of the Izaak Walton building in 1981. It moved to 1240 A-M in 1965. Studio locations included 119 West Sioux Avenue; 331 and a half South Pierre Street; 110 West Capitol and current 106 West Capitol. Sorenson paid 115-thousand dollars for KCCR in 1972. The estimated cost for constructing the station in 1958 was just under 10-thousand dollars.
