The Sully Buttes Charger girls fought, scrapped, and pulled away to a 50-34 victory over the Jones County Coyotes Tuesday night in Onida, while the Charger boys had to get a couple of late three point shots, and free throws to hold off Jones County 57-54 in the nightcap in Onida.
The Charger girls faced a taller, athletic Jones County squad, and pushed the tempo and cruised to the victory. Leading 25-21 at the half, the 12-3 Chargers outscored the 9-4 Coyotes 25-13 in the second half to secure the victory. Stevie Wittler once again led all scorers with 19 points, while Lydia Hill had a big night in the low post, scoring eighteen. For Jones County, junior Jadyn Jensen hit for 15 points, and was the only scorer in double figures.
The Charger boys had more of a tussle in their contest, as Cooper Feddersen controlled the paint, scored 21 points for the game-12 at the half-and had the 1-12 Coyotes leading 24-23 at halftime. In the second half, Dwight Kinney answered the bell, by scoring 16 points for the game, after scoring only four in the first half. Junior Landon Hepker also scored 16 for the 5-7 Chargers, but five total threes by Jordan Schall and Marshall Wittler combined with 10-15 shooting from the free throw line helped Sully Buttes’ cause.
Next up for Sully Buttes is a Friday night doubleheader at Gettysburg to face rival Potter County. The varsity girls will go first at about 6:15, with the boys game to follow. You can catch both games on Country 95.3FM, pierrecountry dot com, and on Youtube at Country 95.3FM sports with DT Meyer.
