Sully Buttes Girls-Boys Split Doubleheader at Parkston Classic Tuesday

The Sully Buttes Chargers traveled to Parkston for the Annual Classic Tuesday night, and came away with a convincing win for the Charger girls by the final of 43-20 over the Menno Wolves, and a valiant effort for the boys team in falling to the host Parkston Trojans 65-56 at the Armory.

The Charger girls went first, and put the squeeze on Menno, pressuring them with a full court press, combined with aggressive defense to stifle the Wolves.  After one quarter the Chargers led 12-4, and 33-10 at the half.  The third quarter saw the mercy rule enacted with the continuous clock to speed up the contest.  Leading the way in scoring was junior Calleigh Chicoine, ending with 11 points, while Stevie Wittler added ten.

Sully Buttes’ pressure caused Menno into 31 turnovers, while the Chargers offense stalled in the fourth quarter, when they didn’t score, and also committed 18 turnovers of their own.

Sully Buttes—now 5-1—will get back to the court Tuesday January 4th at home against the Philip Lady Scotties.

The Charger boys were outsized and outhustled, but still found a way to hang close against the undefeated Trojans.  Sully Buttes trailed 18-13 after one quarter, and 30-23 at the half.  The Trojans used a potent low post game against the Chargers, and even though Sully Buttes shot better in this contest than in previous games, it wasn’t enough, as they had to resort to fouling in the closing minutes to stop the clock.  Sully Buttes closed to within four, but the Trojans hit their free throws to push their record to 5-0, while the Chargers fall to 0-4.

Parkston shot 12 of 32 from the free throw line, while Sully Buttes was 9 of 13.  Next up for the Chargers is a home contest January 6th against Highmore Harrold.  You can hear coverage of these and all Charger broadcasts on Country 95.3FM, pierrecountry.com, and on Youtube at Country 95.3FM sports.
