Question Marks for Pierre as Softball Sanctioned in South Dakota

In January, the South Dakota High School Activities Association will decide on the first softball season will be played, spring or the fall. Pierre will then have to make several decisions after to be on the field for the first season.

Either decision will be a tough one for Pierre as both seasons have positives and negatives. Athletic Director Brian Moser spoke at a December school board meeting saying that the AA athletic directors were split 50/50 on if they would like a spring or fall season. The Sioux Falls and Rapid City Area AA schools are a proponent of the spring because of Club teams playing in the spring and afraid of girls not playing for their school to play on a club team. However, Moser says the ESD schools are concerned about the number of athletes if the sport is played in the fall…

Moser says another concern for Pierre to have softball in the fall is the bus company they are currently in contract. The bus company works with Spearfish, Rapid City Stevens, Rapid City Central and Douglas along with Pierre. Moser says they will need to figure out transportation to road games…

For Pierre, weather is biggest concern for having softball in the spring but there will have to be plenty of questions answered before Pierre begins playing softball, if they choose to do so. Moser says facilities is another question to be answered…

Moser says one thing is for certain, the Activities Association will sanction the sport in the fall or spring and then Pierre will have to make their decisions. The Activities Association will have its next board meeting on Wednesday, January 12.
