Down But not Out, Charger Girls Roar Back with Road Victory

It took a decisive fourth quarter for Sully Buttes to come back and down the Herreid Selby Area Wolverines 42-34 Friday night in Selby.

Sully Buttes led 8-7 at the end of the first quarter in a defensive contest, but were outscored 11-4 in the second quarter and trailed 18-12 at halftime.  The Wolverines locked down Sully Buttes on the offensive end, and the Chargers didn’t help their cause, acquiring foul troubles for three of their starters.

But the third quarter saw both teams come out stronger on the offensive end, as the Wolverines led 30-25 after three quarters.  In the fourth, junior Allyson Wittler helped kickstart the Sully Buttes offense, with 3 three point shots, and after scoring only two points in the first half, Wittler ended the night leading all scorers with 17 points.

The Chargers also put on pressure of their own, and the young Wolverines couldn’t find an answer, getting outscored 17-4 in the final stanza.  Herreid Selby Area committed 15 turnovers, while the Chargers tallied ten.

The leading scorer for the 1-1 Wolverines was senior Kendall Sawinsky.  HSA plays at the Mobridge Classic on Saturday, December 18th.

The 4-0 Chargers go to Aberdeen Monday night to face the top ranked Aberdeen Roncalli Cavaliers, the defending state champions.  The girls/boys doubleheader starts with JV play at 4PM.
