PIERRE — Scammers are taking aim at the Hughes County Sheriff’s Office. Sheriff Patrick Callahan says their office received multiple reports Wednesday of the scam calls using a spoofed ‘773’ local phone number. The scam involves the callers making threats of issuing subpoenas if payment is not made. Callahan says the Sheriff’s office will not call you requesting money or payment. If the Sheriff’s Office has issues involving you, deputies will serve court papers to you in person by a uniformed Deputy Sheriff in marked Hughes County Sheriff’s Office patrol vehicle. The Sheriff’s Office will not accept gift cards and if bail or other financial arrangements need to be made, the Office will work with individuals. Callahan says if you get such a call and doubt its legitimacy; contact the Sheriff’s Office at 773-7470 and speak with a Deputy.
