Since senior Addie Cumbow and Jenna Bush entered their freshman year and started playing on the volleyball team, they didn’t get to practice or see the varsity team practice after the SoDak 16. They didn’t get to experience a home SoDak 16 game either. That is, until 2021.
The Governors opened up the season at 7-0 and jumped to the top of the AA standings. There was cautious optimism in town knowing it was a great start but there was still plenty of season left, including a brutal eight match stretch that saw all eight teams inside the top ten. The Governors came out of it going 5-3 including a sweep of Lincoln and incredible five set win over Harrisburg. This team is for real. Pierre finished at 15-5, the number five seed in the state and took away any doubt on if this team was going to get to the state tournament. The Governors swept the Yankton Gazelles in the SoDak 16 behind a huge crowd at Riggs High School advancing to its first state tournament since 2016.
For the two seniors, they’re both happy to have this in their senior year. Bush says she’s ready to play this weekend…
