South Dakota Discovery Center Opens Exhibit On Soil Health

PIERRE — Officials with the South Dakota Discovery Center in Pierre opened a new exhibit Friday evening that will take little explorers on an adventure to learn about soil health. Director of Special Projects Anne Lewis showed a group how the Soil is Life exhibit shows kids how tardigrades fertilize soil…and it’s just how you think soil gets fertilized…

The tardigrades kiosk is one of four interactive pieces of in the exhibit along with a tree kids can crawl through. Lewis says the exhibit is the only one like it…

Lewis says she has a personal goal as an educator to make sure students have at least four experiences learning about soil and water before they graduate high school…

The exhibit can be moved for mobile presentations across the state. Visitors to the Discovery Center can also help build the displays “soil ceiling” by using knitting and craftwork to create fabric “soils” and critters for the ceiling. Executive Director Dr. Rhea Waldman says they are trying to incorporate art from STEAM; science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics in the Soil is Life exhibit.
