Opponents Come Out In Strength Against Rental Registration Program

PIERRE — After weeks and months of taking input and making adjustments, the Pierre City Commission took more public input Tuesday night on a proposed dwelling rental registration and inspection program. The opposition to the plan was literally 15 to one with only a single proponent testifying in favor of the plan. Jill Madsen is President of Bender Midwest Properties, which has three buildings in Pierre totaling over 170 units…

Jessie Lee is concerned about what the program would mean for tenant rights and privacy…

Tom Maher says the program is not necessary…

Opponents also say the program is vague; will negatively impact the workforce and will increase costs for tenants. The Pierre City Commission took no action on the plan and will bring it back in two weeks for further discussion.
