USS Pierre Still Planned Despite Early LCS Ships Being Decommissioned

PIERRE — The U-S-S Pierre is still in the works despite news earlier this year that some Littoral Combat Ships, like the Pierre are already being retired well short of their expected life span. South Dakota Senator Mike Rounds says the Pierre is still in the plans…

L-C-S-One, the U-S-S Freedom, is scheduled for decommissioning at the end of September. It was commissioned in November of 2008. L-C-S-Two, the U-S-S Independence, was decommissioned at the end of July after being commissioned in October of 2010. L-C-S’s Three, Four, Seven and Nine, the Fort Worth, Coronado, Detroit and Little Rock are scheduled for decommissioning in early 2022. A San Diego Union-Tribune article from May 15th states a new class of frigate ships along with unmanned ships and aircraft could very well do the work intended for L-C-S- class vessels. The Pierre is listed in the Naval Vessel Register as being “authorized for US Navy construction.”
