It was a windy and misty day in Mitchell on Thursday, but it didn’t stop both Pierre Governor soccer teams as they downed the Mitchell Kernels 4-1 in the boys game and 3-1 in the girls contest.
In the boys game, Cole Peterson had his third hat trick of the season as Rylan Derry assisted on all three goals while Peterson would return the favor on Derry’s goal. Peterson would open the scoring late in the first half to give Pierre a 1-0 lead. Midway through the second, the Kernels were able to take advantage of a defensive miscue by the Governors to score the team’s first goal of the season. A couple of minutes later the Govs would think they were taking the lead but the assistant referee deemed the play offside nixing the goal and keeping it tied at one. Pierre used it to their advantage scoring three times in the final 16 minutes of the game to now stand at 4-2-1 on the season.
The girls team had been lacking a solid start in the last several games but Avery Davis made sure to end that, with a goal at the 10 minute mark of the first half. Even though it was the only goal of the half, the Governors sustained pressure outshooting the Kernels 9-3 in the first half. Elli Hughes would tap in the second goal of the game after a nice through ball from Natalie Flottmeyer. Seven minutes later, Brianna Sargent would score on the corner kick to take a 3-0 lead. Mia Mullenmeister made three great plays in succession to score Mitchell’s lone goal with under ten minutes to play and it was too late for a Kernel comeback as the Govs improve to 6-1 on the season.
The Governors will be off until next Thursday when they take on the Harrisburg Tigers at home. You can hear both games on KCCR, kccrradio.com and watch both games on YouTube at KCCR Sports beginning with coverage at 3:40.
