Sully Buttes Football Faces Colome in Onida to Open Season

The Sully Buttes Chargers football team is set to begin its season tonight in front of the home fans in Onida as they take on the Colome Cowboys.

The Chargers were a .500 ball club last year missing the playoffs in 9A but this year will slide back down into the 9B ranks. The Chargers though, on reputation, have garnered votes throughout the state from both the coaches and media to be ranked fifth in the coaches poll and receiving votes in the media poll. On the flip side, Colome also did not make the playoffs last year and did not receive any votes into either poll. This is also a rematch of the 2018 state championship in which the Cowboys narrowly beat the Chargers in overtime 48-42. Head Coach of the Sully Buttes Chargers, Mark Senftner returns to the sidelines for his first game as head coach since taking a leave of absence in the early part of the 2020-2021 girls basketball season. He says the first games are always an unknown…

But Senftner says he’s impressed with the work from the freshmen…

Senftner says the backfield is a bright spot for the Chargers heading into the season.

The Chargers and Cowboys kick off the season at 7:00 in Onida. You can listen to the game on Country 95.3 and pierrecountry.com and also watch on YouTube at Country 95.3 Sports with the voice of the Sully Buttes Chargers DT Meyer and Lewis Hofer on the call with coverage beginning at 6:35.
